H.E. Dr. Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed 

High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia

 

Dr. Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed is currently Maldives`s High Commissioner to Malaysia.
Born in 1980, Dr. Mariyam graduated with a Bachelor of Science (first class) from
Bangalore University of India in 2005. She obtained a Master of Science in Biomedical
Science in 2007 from the University of Westminster of London, United Kingdom on a
Villa-Westminster scholarship. She received a PhD in Microbiology (Environmental
Biotechnology) from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Molecular Science, Universiti
Putra Malaysia in 2023.


Dr. Mariyam joined the government service in June 1999. At a young age, she worked in
the Ministry of Health. Since then, worked in various departments /divisions in the
government of the Maldives and earned a steady stream of promotion through the
government. During her time in the government, she fulfilled technical positions such as a
senior scientific officer (Deputy Director General) in the Health Ministry and Lecturer at
Maldives National University. In addition, in the government, she has represented
Maldives in international fora such as WHO, FAO, SAARC and Codex Alimentarius
Commission.


As a High Commissioner, she prioritises working diligently and sincerely to enhance the
opportunities between the two nations. The government policies are to improve trade and
economic ties between the two nations, fortify bilateral ties, and make consular matters
easier and more convenient for Maldivians residing in Malaysia. Dr. Mariyam has proven
her excellence in performance and leadership in her career.
